Red wine is well-known for promoting a healthy heart and healthy cholesterol levels. Researchers believe that resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound found in certain foods including grape skins and red wine, is responsible for these benefits. Polyphenols are plant-derived chemicals with certain properties believed to promote antioxidant activity, cleansing, inflammation reduction and skin rejuvenation within the body.

Resveratrol is produced by plants in response to injury or fungal infection. It also protects plants from UV radiation and other harmful substances.
